it happens before I save the document. Yesterday I saved a document in a
subfolder of My documents and the .bak file is saved in Desktop. Sometimes
I find .bak files in home folder of Abiword, and they are not a temp file.

Looks like an iconv problem. Make sure that you're building against the
libiconv from our CVS and NOT NOT NOT Solaris' builtin iconv.
