Last night and again this morning, Sept. 24th, I had a Rufous/Allens
Hummingbird visit my feeder in northern St Louis County at Crane Lake. I
haven’t seen the bird since 8 am this morning despite watching all morning.

as a Hermit Thrush because they have a very
similar trill sound that they make as a secondary call. The Towhee is still
singing now and he has mixed in the Hermit Thrush sounding trill at times.
It's fun to hear the different calls. Made my day!

I took a quick look for the BBWoodpecker at the Orr Bog Walk in St Louis Co and
he is still in the nest, but is very close to fledging. In the short time I was
there, I did not see either adult.

Here is some refreshing news! I just heard and then I spotted a Pine
Grosbeak here in northern St Louis County.
There is a cold front heading our way tomorrow and the weather forecast
is predicting 1 - 3 inches of snow.

There was a Great Gray Owl on Hwy 53 just south of Cook on Friday. Where the
hwy crosses the Rice River by the Hill Biomass plant.

fully leaved out yet so they're easy to see right now. And last but not
least, I heard tons of Veerys calling and singing this morning.
Wilson's Snipe seem to like logged off areas and they were calling from the
slash piles. I could walk right up to them before they flushed.

I have a male Pine Grosbeak visiting the feeders in my backyard this
morning. The bird appears to have something wrong with one of his
legs/feet, but otherwise looks healthy. It's been 2 weeks since I've seen a
Pine Grosbeak, that was back on March 12th.

Several waves of Redpolls came in with the snow this morning and among them
was a small flock of 7 Pine Grosbeaks. It's looking a lot like November here
today at Crane Lake.

Service. Walk through the rubble and take a right at the fork. Trailing

Yesterday afternoon, a Hawk Owl was perched in an Aspen tree just south of
Cook on US hwy 53. At the time, it was 52 degrees and sunny.

There were close to 100 Loons on the west end of Lake Vermilion yesterday,
Thursday. The fishing must have been good along the edge of the ice in the
bay. The smaller lakes in the area froze over last night.

It's inevitable, winter weather is marching south. On Saturday, in Crane
Lake, I heard and saw 3 Pine Grosbeaks flying over, and on Sunday a flock of
3 Snow Buntings were flushed from the roadside by Lake Vermilion.

Over 60 Red-necked Grebes were counted on Sand Point Lake in northern St
Louis County on Saturday morning.
There were adults and juveniles. You could see the faint remnants of stripes
on the faces of the juveniles.

203. I heard the Olive-sided Flycatcher the next
morning, but I couldn't find him again on Sunday, June 15th. There were a
lot of Alder Flycatchers calling in the area, and a Lincoln's Sparrow.

Yesterday I observed a male Cardinal at Crane Lake in northern St Louis
County. Crane Lake is 4 miles from the Canadian border.
This morning a friend called to say she has a female Cardinal at her (empty)
feeder at Buyck, MN. Buyck is about 15 miles south of Crane Lake.

and a flock of about 20 Redpolls in the birch trees. Next weekend is opening
firearms deer hunting season so I wouldn't recommend hiking unless you wear
blaze orange.

Saw several Snow Buntings along the road Thursday at Crane Lake in northern
St Louis County.
2 Surf Scoters were seen on the lake and a Black-backed Woodpecker in the
woods. The BB Woodpecker was a female and vocalized quite a bit - it was
interesting to hear the difference in their call from the

Then I observed one bird fluttering its wings like young birds will do when
they are begging for food. An adult male then fed the begging bird. I wonder
if they already have young birds just fledged or if this was a courtship
ritual.

back on June 11th, but he evidently stayed in the area. Any kind of Dove is
unusual in the boreal forest up here (including Mourning Dove).
