I can confirm the bug. I've downgraded all my libc6 packages at first.
This didn't help. I've downgraded apt and now I have aptitude back. For
those who want to have a working aptitude: You need to have the repo's
of karmic enabled. Then do sudo apt-get --reinstall install

I can confirm it works. The only issue I had was
/usr/bin/diff: /etc/X11/app-defaults/Xedit: No such file or directory
and Adept telling me later (much later) that there was a difference.
Then showed zero differences..
But now running Karmic coming from Hardy directly.

I totally agree. I had the same issue today.
While I understand the case for apport bug reporting, I don't like the
fact that I cannot submit a bug via the normal way. When you're not
running Ubuntu at that moment it is hard to use the ubuntu-bug script.

I agree with Noel that /var doesn't need to be checked for free
diskspace for the dist-upgrade.
We've given ariel the following patch, where we don't check /var/ but
/var/apt/archive instead. The upgrade process continues as expected. The
patch is checking archivedir twice, so I guess it is safe
