Well, my daily tool is Maya since 1998, and I am also using Houdini. RS
doesn't look anything like them to be honest.

Potete consigliarmi un buon prodotto per videoconferenza opensource?
Molti anni fa avevo installato e provato bbb. Da allora non mi sono piu'
occupato della questione e ultimamente mi trovo impegnato a mettere su un
sistema funzionante, affidabile e intuitivo.
Openmeetings e BBB erano quelli che andavano per la maggiore, forse ora
c'e' qualcos'altro o magari qualche sistema da utilizzare online.

All good advice, nice to see the list is still alive :)

I saw that you're using Global Illumination. A very difficult and
complicated feature in RS3d !
The infamous Garry and me did some heavy testing, trying to optimize GI
settings in RS... must be at least a decade ago.


But computers in 2017 are dream machines compared to the noisy heavy
monsters from those days. RS runs fine on a cheap multi-core 64-bit machine
with 16 gigs of ram, so on such a machine we can crank up these settings:

- increase Ray Count in the GI material: makes use of all the CPU cores,
including hyperthreaded. The higher the better, unfortunately it's maxed
out at 100 by a slider (v6)
- decrease Blur Level and Blur Iterations in Post Image Effects. But
beware: if it's too low, noise is introduced.
- perhaps modify things like GI_blur_reflected, GI_brightness_control,
blurwidth_control

Or export the scene as .obj and render with other software.

[User-list] Viewport navigation behavior

Hello everybody!

I can't remember how to modify the viewport / camera navigation behavior in
order for it to work like Maya viewport does.
In other words, by default Realsoft 3d viewport / camera shows the object
going opposite the movement of the camera (which is correct of course).
I want exactly the opposite, that is if I rotate around the object from
left to right I want to see the object spinning  from left to right too.

I hope I have been able to explain myself well! :-D

I saw that you're using Global Illumination. A very difficult and
complicated feature in RS3d !
The infamous Garry and me did some heavy testing, trying to optimize GI
settings in RS... must be at least a decade ago.


But computers in 2017 are dream machines compared to the noisy heavy
monsters from those days. RS runs fine on a cheap multi-core 64-bit machine
with 16 gigs of ram, so on such a machine we can crank up these settings:

- increase Ray Count in the GI material: makes use of all the CPU cores,
including hyperthreaded. The higher the better, unfortunately it's maxed
out at 100 by a slider (v6)
- decrease Blur Level and Blur Iterations in Post Image Effects. But
beware: if it's too low, noise is introduced.
- perhaps modify things like GI_blur_reflected, GI_brightness_control,
blurwidth_control

Or export the scene as .obj and render with other software.

di mezzo anche tomcat7 che ora non parte piu'.

faccio presente che questo problema si e' manifestato in un macchina in cui
ho fatto l'aggiornamento di tomcat7 come previsto dall'ultimo aggiornamento
di sicurezza, invece su un'altra macchina perfettamente uguale ho
disinstallato e riinstallato tomcat7, la directory /var/lib/tomcat7 e':

I stopped bacula-fd and delete .state files on all clients.

E' il modello base quello con lo schermo piu' piccolo, ho trovato un kindle
paperwhite a 80 euro, mi sembra buono ma attendo ulteriori commenti prima
di acquistarlo.

 Convertire è una stupidata  e lo fai anche con linux, ma se devi
 sproteggere lo puoi fare solo con windows. Per esempio io ho acquistato
 una ricaribile perchè aveva uno sconto interessante da bookrepublic, ma
 quando acquisto, la maggioranza dei libri sono in epub adobe drm e
 quindi debbo sproteggerli e poi convertirli in mobi.

Questa storia dei formati mi frena moltissimo, mi pare che l'epub sia il
formato emergente e kindle non lo supporta.

 spesso al buio, un tablet ti darà lo stesso affaticamento agli occhi di
 un epaper, e sarà molto più flessibile (più formati, più app, maggiore
 personalizzabilità) e veloce (enormemente più veloce)


Beh la tecnologia di illuminazione dello schermo del tablet e' differente
da quella dell'e-reader, nel primo caso e' la stessa cosa che se leggessi
col notebook.

 un DX e sui pdf i 3 in piu' si sentono (anzi, vedono) molto. Sui documenti

 In realtà è una buona pratica verificare che un sito sia quantomeno
 utilizzabile anche da un browser testuale. È uno dei pochi modi per
 verificarne sensatamente l'accessibilità :P


Si ok ma e' anche vero che la tecnologia evolve, se per rendere un sito
accessibile devo rinunciare a javascript o ad altre tecnologie che ritengo
indispensabili per il mio sito, beh.allora ritorniamo ai siti con html
statico e facciamo prima.

Sapete com'e', noi informatici divoriamo manuali su manuali e, per quanto
mi riguarda, spesso sono costretto a leggerli in formato elettronico sullo
schermo del mio notebook.
I miei occhi stanno cominciando a protestare cosi' mi sono deciso ad
acquistare un e-reader.
Il problema e' che non sono affatto informato, ovviamente mi servirebbe un
buon e-reader che possibilmente supporti anche i pdf visto che la maggior
parte dei manuali li ho in pdf.
Cosa mi consigliate?

 Mi trovo molto bene e legge il formato pdf senza problemi.
 Le immagini sono, ovviamente, solo in bianco e nero, la durata è infinita,
 puoi anche avere l'indirizzo email del kindle per mandartici i pdf
 comodamente senza doverlo attaccare al pc.

Vorrei creare una script da lanciare all'avvio del sistema per poter
configurare la rete.
Uno script interativo, un po come viene fatto durante l'installazione del
sistema, in cui l'utente fornisce tutti i parametri richiesti che vengono
poi inseriti nel file interfaces.

[git-users] Why git merge always ask for a commit message?

I have two branches: devel and master.
I'm using git as repository for some applications.
Usually I do changes under devel branch, commit and push.
Then I do a git checkout master, git merge devel and push and all done.
I always have done this but now, in a new application, when I do git merge 
devel into master it asks me for a commit message.
I read that it is not Fast-forward but it is done by recursive strategy.
Configuration are the same in all my projects so I don't know why now git 
merge asks for a commit message and git merge isn't done Fast-forward.
Can you help me please?

[OpenLDAP] non riesco ancora a capire se.........

.sia meglio usare LDAP oppure un normale dbms.
Attualmente utilizzo ldap per memorizzare gli account virtuali per un 
sistema di posta elettronica.
Se tali accounts li avessi messi in un dbms non sarebbe cambiato niente 
e, anzi, forse avrei meno difficolta' nel caso dovessi aggiungere un 
attributo, basta fare un alter table e aggiungere il campo che mi interessa.

Con ldap fare questo e' piu' complicato.
Scusate per l'ingenuita' della domanda.

I've beta tested Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit for one year and I can say 
with no doubt that is the best Windows, far far far far far better than XP.


I'm a 3D artist, Maya user, and the Autodesk software (Maya) works just 
better than ever: it's faster, more stable and has no one of the graphic 
glitches that were on XP.


I really don't know what problems you found on 7, for my experience it 
works just fine, it's great.

No niente kerberos.
Semplicemente un server ldap, per la precisione su una macchina linux 
uso slapd, e in un'altra macchina abbiamo websense che gestisce le 
autorizzazioni collegandosi al server ldap.
Ieri ho riavviato il server slapd e improvvisamente websense non si 
collega piu'.
Beninteso, potrebbe essere un problema di websense anche perche' se uso 
un client, tipo ldap browser, riesco a connettermi al server ldap e

[Dovecot] service imaps.

In dovecot.conf protocol imaps is set to port 10943.
ssl_listen = *:10943
The standard port for imaps is 993.
So why it is set to 10943?

 Per aggiungere un attributo castom basta modificare uno degli schemi
 di openldap. Io ho modificato Inetorgperson.schema aggiungendo alla
 fine quando segue:

Preferisco lasciare gli schemi standard cosi' come sono e farmi una
objectClass ausiliaria da aggiungere a quelle gia' esistenti nel mio
albero, come suggeritomi.
D'altronde avevo gia' richiesto un OID per la mia azienda.
L'unica cosa che non mi e' chiara e' questa sintassi IA5string.
Io ho usato la 1.3.6.1.4.1.1466.115.121.1.44{64}.

[OpenLDAP] attributo per il codice fiscale.

Salve.
In azienda si e' reso necessario gestire il codice fiscale di ogni
singolo dipendente.
Nel mio database LDAP ho previsto le seguenti obectClasses:
Top;
person;
organizationalPerson;
inetOrgPerson;
posixAccount;

Tra gli attributi di tutte quete objectClasses non mi sembra ce ne sia
uno adatto per potervi inserire il codice fiscale della persona.
Qualcuno ha avuto lo stesso problema ed ha trovato una soluzione?

:-( possibile che non sia stato previsto in nessuno schema? 
Eppure e' un dato importante non dico di voler usare per forza un
attributo chiamato codice fiscale ma almeno uno con lo stesso
significato, ad esempio un attributo che possa gestire il social
security number americano che dovrebbe corrispondere al nostro codice
fiscale, ma non c'e' nemmeno quello.

 scusa la curiosità: perché Tomcat compilato a mano? lo uso da tempo 
 senza problemi e vedo che in genere consigliano di utilizzare il 
 pacchetto binario (con java di sun), se ti può essere utile questo è uno 
 dei miei file presenti in /etc/apache2/sites-available (poi metti il 
 link in sites-enabled).

Perche' perfino in testing la versione di tomcat e' vergognosamente
ferma alla 5 quando da un secolo e' stata rilasciata la 6.

I try to install this package but I have missing dependencies because I
don't have java5.
Is it for java6 or java5?

  Capito quindi non fa per te, con Courier invece potevi usare il db?
 
 afaik no, perché fa solo salvataggio su mbox e maildir.

Ho visto il sito, mi pare occorra un smtp tipo postfix e fin qui ok, per
quanto riguarda il pop3 e l'imap invece fa tutto dbmail.
Per l'utenticazione degli utenti? 
Posso sempre usare LDAP?
L'unica differenza e' che dbmail butta e prende la mail da un database
mi pare di capire.

 I team di maintainers sono poi gli stessi

 allora, negli anni scorsi io sono stato molto attivo nel proporre
 openldap. Adesso conto di abbandonarlo progressivamente e di
 centralizzare tutto su postgresql

Io openldap lo devo tenere perche' su di esso si basa l'autenticazione
di varie applicazioni, mi ero sbattuto per metterlo su ed ora non mi va
di abbandonarlo, sebbene non mi sia tuttora chiarissimo quale possa
essere il vantaggio ad usare openldap piuttosto che un dbms.

 Boh, ci vedo enne motivi: backup, scalabilità, facilità di gestione, 
 flessibilità (hai presente migrare un mailserver in maniera indolore?)
 
Per migrare un server a parte l'installazione di tutti i servizi sul nuovo, 
mi faccio un tar del filesystem contenente le mail e lo riverso sulla nuova 
macchina.

 storage. In theory millions of accounts can be managed using dbmail. One 
 could, for example, run 4 different servers with the pop3 daemon each 
 connecting to the same database (cluster) server.

Ah non avevo capito, lo usi per lo storage delle mail su un database.
Ma a che ti serve memorizzare le mail su database?

 Almost. You should probably still have at least one domain listed, that
 is used for the right-hand-side of aliases where the target should be a
 local delivery. One approach is to use:
 
 main.cf:
   mydestination = local.invalid
 
   smtpd_sender_restrictions = 
   check_sender_access regexp:/etc/postfix/reject_invalid
   check_recipient_access regexp:/etc/postfix/reject_invalid
 

I put all checks in smtpd_recipient_restrictions.
Is it the same?

Hello, sorry for my bad english.
I have to send messages to more than one person using a single mail
address.
So I've created a virtual-alias: [EMAIL PROTECTED] myaccount and a
text file, myaccount.txt, with all the addresses that I want to send
mail.
Then I put in /etc/aliases:
myaccount: :include:/etc/postfix/myaccount.txt.
Now I send my mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and it is received by all
the accounts that are in the file myaccount.txt and it's all ok. 
The problem is that the server name is mail.example.com and if I send a
mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] it is delivered in the same way as
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
I don't want that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is delivered.
I want that only adresses with @example.com are delivered.
How can I solve it?

creare nuova partizione per LVM.

Di solito questo lavoro lo facevo in fase d'installazione e ci pensava
l'installer.
Ora ho un disco /dev/cciss/c0d1 pulito sul quale vorrei creare una unica
partizione da assegnare a LVM.
cfdisk mi da un errore forse perche' il disco e' un disco logico facente
parte di un raid.
Come posso procedere?

FATAL ERROR cannot open disk drive.

 Si, nessun problema con la release stable. Io uso dei g5 con controller RAID
 SMARTARRAY e200i ed e400. La serie più piccola (150) a memoria monta degli
 Adaptec RAID SATA che non erano supportati (nativamene da stable), per i 350
 ed i 380 OK.

Non ho i server sottomano e non ricordo che controller raid montano.
So che sono dotati di 8 dischi.
Hai usato tutti e 8 per un raid 5?

Dovrei installare una debian stable su un server del tipo indicato in
oggetto.
Sono server con 4 processori a 64bit, 16G di ram 8 hard disk, ecc. ecc.
Qualcuno ci ha gia' sbattuto il naso?
L'hardware e' riconosciuto dalla debian etch?

unstable ma stabilizzati.

 Nell'ultimo mese non sono riuscito ad installare Debian su circa 10 
 nuovi server per via del fatto che non riconosceva il 90% dell'hardware 
 e su Testing/Unstable i pacchetti che mi servivano non erano presenti e/o con 
 qualche baco.
 
 Quindi sono stato costretto ad installare Ubuntu Server.
 E sottolineo costretto perchè uso Debian da 10 anni e mi è dispiaciuto 
 moltissimo.
 Ovviamente potevo mettermi a ricompilare pacchetti ed altre attività, ma...è 
 giusto?
 

Usciamo dall'oggetto del thread ma concordo con te per quanto riguarda
Debian.sempre piu' deludente...come ti trovi con ubuntu?

 mi intrometto da semplice utente desktop, giusto per curiosità
 non è dovuto per caso al fatto che siamo agli sgoccioli del passaggio
 alla nuova stable ed effettivamente etch ha un kernel da dinosauro?
 nel senso, è una cosa che potenzialmente puo' accadere sempre, visti i
 rilasci di versione abbastanza lontani uno dall'altro?

 Ubuntu e altre distribuzioni hanno un rilascio stabile ogni 6 mesi.
 Se si accorgono che 6 mesi sono stretti, la release successiva avrà
 poche novità.
 E' comunque vero, che dal rilascio di una ubuntu stable spesso passano
 altri 6 mesi prima che sia veramente stabile :)
 

Scusa per sapere..tu sei quindi passato definitivamente ad ubuntu?

 Poi chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf e guarda se va. Al massimo prova a
 rimuovere in /etc/network/interfaces le righe relative al server DNS,
 che potrebbero fare conflitto.

 un saluto Mauro io sono passato a grub2... si ferma come nel tuo
 caso, ma dopo un po' riesce ad eseguire correttamente l'aggiornamento.
 tu quale versione stai aggiornando?

Grub 0.97, il pacchetto incluso in lenny.
Passerei a grub2 se non avessi timore che poi la macchina non parta
piu'.

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub

e qui si ferma, non prosegue.
E' un problema comune?

 It depends on the backend you use. If you use filesystem quota's, then
 there is no need to use the dovecot LDA, because the actual quota usage
 is already being updated by the filesystem/kernel itself.
 
 However if you use Maildir++ quota, then something has to update the
 maildirsize file so that it contains the actual usage of that Maildir.
 So you need the dovecot LDA here, or another LDA that can update those
 files in a compatible way.
 
 However I prefer to always use dovecot's deliver, because it
 automatically updates indexes and caches when a mail arrives, and this
 cannot be done by another LDA because the indexes and caches are dovecot
 specific.

 You also need to specify what backend you want to use (fs quota,
 maildir++ quota's, ...).

Yes I've just specified it, it's maildir butI need to enable
quota only for protocol lda or also for pop3 and imap?

[Dovecot] quota attribute for ldap.

I want to manage quotas and I want to manage quota limit with ldap. 
I use debian etch with slapd version 2.3 as ldap server.
I see that in the schemas that comes with openLDAP debian distribution
there are no quota attributes.
How you have solved it?
