Re: An old iBook, what to do with it?

2017-12-01 Thread Angelo Danio
I was given what has turned out to be a Mid 2002 12" 700 Mhz G3 iBook with
30 gig hard drive, 256 meg RAM and an AirPort card. No charger so no idea
if it works. Maxing the RAM with a 512meg PC100 SODIMM = easy. Hard drive
upgrade, not so much.

I had anche iBook G4 with tiger and maxing RAM was usable with ten four fox
and even safari but slow and chunky.
But not so easy ti install without tricks because max OS was panther and be
sure have DVD drive, tiger in CD not so easy to fine.
Currently i own anche early model, clamshell 1999 running Ubuntu server
16.04. there is Aldo a version with gui, lubuntu but You need a DVD ti
install.
Airport on my G4 was working only in WEP encryptyon but You Can install
anche esternalizzazione wifi pendrive.
But First be sure It works !

iBook broken

My iBook after a shock is no more operating.
It starts properly but after a while, a dozen of minutes freeze and
it's impossible to operate anything, while remaining on up to
discharging of batteries: is not warming, so is not a fan problem; the
hard disk is ok, because I was able to save my docs, and even
replacing hard disk I have the same problem. Any hints? there is any
hardware test to perform?
Thanks for any opinion.

running a g4 powerbook with leopard

You need the final PPC version: 10.6.3 available here:

 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575

I run Tiger and ITunes 6.0.4 ; I tried to download 10.6.3 but cannot
install in Tiger, needs Leopard.
Do you know the last version for Tiger? I run succesfully my iTunes,
but I'm not able to tune the radio: just opening a new window with
message contacting radio service but does'nt show any station, but if
I enter manually the stream I can listen and shows up in Music

System Requirements for iTunes 10.6.3
 Macintosh Software

Mac OS X version 10.5.8
Safari 4.0.3 or later
200MB of available disk space
iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match availability may vary by country.

Macintosh Hardware

Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 processor and 512MB of RAM

run 9 natively also in a more recent G4 or even more recent via

I did run ubuntu 10.04 on a G3 as yours with airport, and now I run Debian
on an iBook G4 with airport express and both wireless was aknownledged from
linux on the fly. If you have not airport, I suggest to use DLink equipment
that are compatible both with apples and tuxes. (and you can reach better
bitrate with newer equipment: airport is limited to 46Mbps, while new
equipment may reach 100Mbps, if your ISP can support it)

AFAIK you cannot install 10.6 because clamshell is a G3 and you can install
an intemediate version of 10.5 with a workaround already discussed on the
list, or 10.4.11, but with this processor IMHO is better to stick to MACOS
9.2 or 8.6. Classilla may give you a decent browsing experience, even if
you don't max RAM.

I pulled out my old iBook 600mHz Dual USB (with 15GB HDD, 385 MB RAM
and DVD player), and I'm hoping to update it so that it runs a little
faster. It currently runs OS X 10.1.5 and does have OS 9 also
 installed.

Any recommendations as to the newest OS X that would not run too
sluggish on such an older computer?

You can try maxing RAM (replacing 256 card with 512, cost I guess 10$)
and install xubuntu or lubuntu (pay attention for PPC) , and you'll have a
decent PC ... but not for video. I won't update HD because it's more then
enough to install ubuntu, it will keep about 2-3 GB and it's not easy to
replace HD in iBook. probably also airport wifi won't work.

airport now is cheap but not so easy to found ... and not so performant,
because you need the first one (not express) I suggest D=Link, have a good
Mac support and even cheaper

PS: What browser can I use that will be very light on resources so
this machine won't drag like a dinosaur?

as browsing you cannot have a modern browsing experience with a G3: you
should need tiger 10.4.11 and your G3 even maxing RAM will be so slow as
unusable or stick to OS 9.2 and in this case Classilla. In this case you
don-t need to max RAM, 256MB is enough, altough if you choose Tiger you
need at least 1 GB.
