seems to work fine without putting up error messages on loading and without

I have tried advice found on the web about similar problems with Acer
5735Z. This was to add i915.powersave=0 pci=noacpi to the boot line
(GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub). This certainly got rid
of screen flicker, and reduced the frequency of the system log being flooded

documentation of the process. Synaptic initially presented the option
of choosing the old version, but doing so had no effect, and the option
no longer shows up (presumably because the old version has been pushed
out of the local apt
