I think I may have found a solution. I will update again in a few days if this remains stable. I have blacklists acer-wmi. The default acpi driver seems to work fine without putting up error messages on loading and without the problems (so far) with flooding the log files. I have successfully

Hullo, I have tried advice found on the web about similar problems with Acer 5735Z. This was to add i915.powersave=0 pci=noacpi to the boot line (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub). This certainly got rid of screen flicker, and reduced the frequency of the system log being flooded
