I encountered the same issue, after a few days and found the
following.
This error only happens when I try to run the Android SDK from vnc.
(Uunbutu 10.10, I tried both vnc4server and tightvnc).
If I run it from physical X windows, it works fine.

Ubuntu 10.10 is smoothest platform I run so far.(after Windows :)
So either you have corrupted Linux - broken files f.e. Or you have
broken RAM.
