This is a rather big and not yet widely tested patch, but the only
option we have right now to prevent people from breaking their screen
config, so we need to take it. The error prone bits are in the separate
callout, so the impact of bugs there is indeed rather limited.

The attached stacktrace indicates this crash is happening in compiz

I also see exactly the same behavior with Oneiric's Compiz and Radeon HD
3200 (AMD 780G chipset's integrated graphics). Compiz is a lot
slower/laggier than it was in 11.04.

The same here. I can reproduce this bug by hitting alt-space or by
clicking on window menu. Title bars from all windows disappear. I need
to reload window manager (using Compiz Fusion Icon program) to recover

This bug is still not fixed for emesene, because it uses multiple
windows. I attached a test showing the problem:
if one window is shown, the other (iconified) window won't pop up if you
click on the launcher entry.
This means that emesene is still useless in Oneiric with the default
settings.
Crash happens always when demaximizing window of me-tv instance. Also
from calculator launcher when closing calculator (it comes from old
gnome-panel launcher).
