It depends.
For a club programme I start about a week ahead (to allow for failing
concentration). Sort out a varied programme with plenty options if I need an
easier dance or numbers are a problem (I don’t always call longways or contras,
a mix of shapes and styles)
If it’s a dance I don’t
Thanks for the link. We usually finish our club nights with a circle mixer and
that will make a change.
I’ve got rather stuck on Artful Dodger recently. Anyone know who wrote it. I
wrote that down at a dance ages ago when I was less fussy about details.
A1 Forward and back twice
A2 do-ce-do
But Circassian circle (which I agree is a useful dance to end the evening)
doesn’t have an ocean wave.

I like the drawbridge.
I use Galopde as a first dance and ask for well phrased music (with a
2bar,2bar,4bar feel to the A e.g. Winster Gallop) to get people dancing to the
music. Though other dances particularly those with a Dip and Dive or Strip the

I’ll second those two.
And add Two Birthdays and an Anniversary by Rhodri Davies.
This is a Becket dance with a swing with your shadow. The end effects can
confuse if neutral couples change sides too soon. Stand improper at the top,
proper at the bottom, for A1 &2. Change sides after the Shadow
Thinking all dances are 32 bars might be less of a problem in the UK since
clubs programme a mixture, not just contra. Different styles, varying lengths
