Dear Colleagues:
Many of you probably read the articles in yesterday's New
York Times and Wall Street Journal insinuating that AIDS came out
of Africa. Indeed, the Journal entitled their article: Out of
Africa. Notice the direct reference to Lefkowitz's book, Not Out
of Africa, trying to dispute Bernal's Black Athena. So in other
words, the Journal was trying to make a not-so-subtle racist
point about the supposed African origins of AIDS. Therefore, I
did not bother to read the Journal article. But I did read the
Times article. I was struck by one critical passage that deserves
your attention: .... The pivotal finding came from the remains of
a chimpanzee named Marilyn, that died in 1985 and had been
infected with S.I.V.cpz for at least 26 years without showing
signs of AIDS. Federal scientists kept Marilyn's tissues frozen
for 10 years to await the day when new and improved tests could
more precisely identify the infecting virus.
In 1959, Marilyn was taken as an infant from somewhere in
Africa to a United States Air Force colony in New Mexico. There,
Marilyn served as a breeder in research projects.
In 1985, when some chimpanzees were about to be used in AIDS
vaccine research, scientists tested all primates in the colony to
determine if any were infected with H.I.V.-1. Marilyn was the
only one infected with the simian virus.
But just as scientists learned that Marilyn was infected, she
was found dead in her cage after having delivered two stillborn
chimpanzees. An autopsy found no evidence of disease. Marilyn's
remains were then sent to scientists at a National Cancer
Institute laboratory at Fort Detrick, Md., where efforts to grow
the AIDS -like virus failed.
So the tissues were stored in a freezer for 10 years.
In 1995, Dr. Larry O. Arthur, a scientist at Fort Detrick and
a co-author of the study, was trying to clean out a crowded
freezer and found Marilyn's tissues. He called Dr. Hahn because
of her well-known interest in the subject. ......
Notice of course that the critical piece of evidence here
was this chimp Marilyn which was taken out of Africa and brought
to the United States where she participated in experiments
sponsored by the United States Air Force, that is the Pentagon.
At this point in time (1959) it is well know that the United
States government and the Pentagon were actively involved in the
research, development and testing of offensive biological weapons
that today are prohibited under both international law and US
domestic law, including the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972
and the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989. Also,why
in 1985 did Pentagon scientists go back to the Pentagon's
Colorado colony of chimps in order to test for AIDS if they did
not have good grounds to believe there was a good chance that
AIDS could be found there among the Pentagon chimps? Certainly
Marilyn's death was unexplained and curious. So much so that
instead of disposing of her remains at the experimental Pentagon
site in Colorado, the Pentagon scientists shipped them off to
Fort Detrick Maryland, where they were considered so important
that they were preserved for subsequent testing and analysis for
over ten years. Of course what the Times does not report is that
Fort Detrick Maryland has always been the primary center for the
Pentagon's research, development and testing of biological
weapons. If Marilyn had been involved in biological warfare
experiments in Colorado run by the Pentagon, then it would make
perfect sense for these Pentagon scientists to ship her remains
to Fort Detrick for preservation and subsequent analysis under
the direct supervision of the Pentagon that runs Fort Detrick.
The best book I know of about the origins of AIDS coming
out of US government sponsored research is by Dr. Leonard G.
Horowitz, Emerging Viruses: AIDS and Ebola (1997). After reading
this book, I submit you will have a very difficult time believing
that AIDS came out of Africa instead of from US government
sponsored research laboratory. Although not on all fores,this New
York Times article contributes to the overall Horowitz thesis.
