-Caveat Lector- Payoffs long a part of modern Olympics, New York Times reports Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Associated Press NEW YORK (February 21, 1999 2:10 p.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - A construction company run by former IOC president Avery Brundage stood to gain from Berlin's selection as host of the 1936 Olympics, The New York Times reported Sunday. The story also implicates two other past IOC presidents - Henri de Baillet- Latour of Belgium and Sigfrid Edstrom of Sweden. The story in the Times uses the current bribery scandal engulfing IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch as a backdrop, suggesting the problem facing the Olympic leadership is "deeper, older and more profound than what has been presented as a shabby case of some Sydney and Salt Lake City payoffs for IOC votes." The Times drew on the resources of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Los Angeles organization devoted to keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust and combating human rights abuses. "Leaders of the Olympics violated their own rules; they sold their souls," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the center. "They injected politics into sports and they fudged the lines between business and amateurism." Brundage was the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee at the time of the Berlin Games, an infamous Olympics that became a showcase for Nazi Germany. The Times reports the German Olympic Committee assured Brundage that his Chicago construction company would receive the bid to help build the German Embassy in Washington. However, the embassy was not built then because of World War II. Baillet-Latour was IOC president from 1925-42. The Times, acknowledging the difficulty in obtaining details, says his family ran a Belgian bank that was taken over by Deutsche Bank, which helped finance Auschwitz. Edstrom succeeded Baillet-Latour as IOC president in 1942.
