I observe the same thing as James but for me with a segmentation fault.
I commented out the line :
#LoadModule perl_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_perl.so
after that apache run.
I do that because this morning an upgrade of perl (5.8.0 -- 5.8.2) arrived in
testing.
