The only thing I can imagine to cause something like this is the
keybinding suddenly changed. And this I can better imagine done by
some gnome/dbus/gconf thingie than by ratpoison, which lacks any
provisions for that.

to be some hypothetical key no keyboard (at
least definitly no real pc104) has, so I'm guesing it might be some
strange workaround for programs being confused that there is no Hyper
at all. Or something even stranger.

[1] actually xmodmap only takes a look at the old compatibility layer of
the X keyboard, and I've not yet researched how or if modifiers differ
between classic X and xkb extension nowaydays used and whether the functions
ratpoison use
