irssi certainly used to provide irc. It was added in response to
#267411 in 0.8.10-2, but I can't see any reference in the changelog to
it being removed, so I presume it's been overlooked somewhere. I'll dig
through the versions to find out when it disappeared.

Just had a thought. It is normally fixed by resizing the window. It
occured to me that when you open the second tab the terminal widget gets
resized to account for the tab bar.
It's as if the terminal doesn't know how big it is until it's resized so
assumes 80x24.

although that will still use the value from getpwent if you use ~
anywhere.

I've included a patch to make a pyton2.3-rpm package. It builds and
installs locally. A script happily loads the module, but I haven't
tested any rpm operations yet.
I don't know how much of a problem it is not having a python2.1-rpm or
python2.2-rpm packages is.
