RTL8111 is a chip family, relevant is the exact chip version.  Please attach a full dmesg log with the r8169 driver. Would be good if you can test with the latest mainline kernels: 5.13.12, 5.14-rc6

RTL8401 (XID 240) was never supported by r8169. Having said that nothing was dropped from the driver. And most likely you don't have to compile r8101 yourself, most distro's have a pre-compiled package.

r8169 doesn't support XID 240 (= RTL8401), and it's not really worth it to retrofit support for this ancient chip version.  Use Realtek's r8101 driver instead.
