Some updates on this topic. The solution that I proposed was bad then, and is
now worse:
- it assumed that all CF cards report the same CF Card string, which is not
the case.
- it doesn't work on Wheezy - apparently, KDE no longer uses hal.
New proposed solution:

Ough, that's an old one.
Just tested, problem no longer present in current Lenny - inputting
international symbols in dpkg-reconfigure through ncurses seems OK (edit works
- I didn't try saving).
I no longer have a Sarge machine handy, but it wouldn't matter anyway.

To complete, since I found bug 281187 after posting: a quick look to
the copying file looks ok - content very similar to
/usr/share/sl-modem-daemon/copying so license seems fine.

causing the problem, i believe.
The only reference I see to grub there is in kernel-img.conf.
Uninstalling grub (0.97-3) does not change that file, but delete the

I'm still hit by that broken vt bug.
Appeared in the first days of January, and still present on current sid.
I tried currently described solutions, as well as
dpkg --force-all -P xlibs xlibs-data
and reinstall, but still no success.

Sorry to break the party, but the problem is still present. Kernel
2.6.14-7 and grub 0.97-3. Purge freeze just after update-grub completes.
In fact, I'm skeptical that this is a grub bug, since if I remove grub
prior to purging the kernel, it freezes too.

to licensing issue, svnbook is no longer package for Debian, although it

Confirmed. No longer visible on my side.
However, I can't confirm what exactly fixed it, but in the last days
before Christmas IIRC, 2.6.14-5 finally purged correctly.
Would anyone be kind enough to provide recovery instructions for this
issue, for current state and/or when the newer linux-image are
available? Link to an appropriate man page qualify :)

In my case, the affected hardware is a Trident CyberbladeXP.
As reported by Sven Luther, since vesafb is no longer a module, adding
it to /etc/yaird/Default.cfg changes nothing. However, adding
MODULE fbcon
and rebuilding
