I can't do that. If I unblacklist nouveau and remove the nvidia driver,
I just get a black screen right

sorry for the long silence. The workaround suggested above:
-) login as root to a console
-) aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
-) logout from X and login again (restart the X server)
solved the problem.

Please try upgrading libcairo2 to version 1.8.10-5 from unstable.
I just did that:
r...@rotule:/home/julien# dpkg -l libcairo2 | grep libcairo
ii libcairo21.8.10-5
The Cairo 2D vector graphics library
but the problem remains.

to reboot with my previous kernel 2.6.32-3 rather than
2.6.32-5, and with the previous version of fglrx without much success.
Any suggestion apart from reverting one by one all the upgrades I've made? :-)
