Thanks for the bug report. systemd supplies its own kexec service files
and ties kexec rather closely to EFI which is not a great idea. I will
take a look at what I can do to break this dependency since I will be

I am adding code to clear the screen just before calling kexec to start
new kernel. It does clear the screen, but it seems when the new kernel
starts to use framebuffer again, some of the old contents of framebuffer
do come back. Framebuffer will need to be cleared by the kernel which is

I am not seeing this on a freshly installed sid machine. Since you have
zlib1g installed, you must have libz.so.1. What is the output of
ldd /sbin/kexec and /sbin/kexec -v on your laptop?

I am not sure what to do with this bug report. kexec-tools is not
supported on alpha and control file lists supported architectures as
i386 amd64 ppc64 powerpc ia64 s390 arm armel. So this package is not
expected to build on alpha.

kexec kernel and remove the /var/tmp/no-kexec-reboot file. Later when
S85kexec init script runs, it will not find a kexec kernel loaded and
exit. This will result in a cold reboot.
Does this sound workable?

postinst script was not updated to reflect the new boolean type for
LOAD_KEXEC and that is what is causing this bug. I will upload a new
version with updated script.

enable/disable for kexec reboot that others have already suggested, for
example do not load a kexec'able kernel automatically but attempt to
kexec in case user has loaded a kexec kernel by hand etc. So I do not
want to lock myself into only two states.

Looking at the code, that error message is produced for powerpc unless
CONFIG_GAMECUBE is set. That makes me believe only Nintendo Gamecube is
supported for powerpc architecture. So I am disabling powerpc support
for now until a newer upstream version enables support for powerpc in
general.

I can't say I see a problem to begin with here. When one installs a new
kernel via aptitude and grub, symlinks /vmlinuz and /initrd.img would
automatically be updated to point to the new kernel. kexec should
automatically boot the new kernel from /vmlinuz which will be the latest
kernel. I would
