You are correct. Anyone installing vmpk should be able to trigger sounds at
once, without needing to search/download/configure

This was true many years ago, when vmpk was based on RtMidi. It was
replaced by drumstick-rt in vmpk-0.6.0 released in 2014-09-07.
Since then, vmpk has been successfully ported to FreeBSD.
