Cool - thanks for your help with this. I think this is the same problem 
as has been reported against libsdl-mixer1.2; 
<http://bugs.debian.org/298982>: can you try the following workaround?

        # mkdir /etc/timidity
        # touch /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
        $ prboom

Also, what sound hardware do you have?
