You can try to decrease the size of that file by decreasing the
MaxClients setting of your MPM (most probably apache2-mpm-prefork or
apache2-mpm-worker).
It's apache 1.3 with a standard debian configuration (upgraded from
sarge). So I thought it's

collectd does not create any apache statistics and spams the syslog
with the error message:
collectd[7855]: apache: curl_easy_perform failed: Failed writing body
The collectd config contains the ?auto suffix in the URL:
