I think this may be a bug upstream rather than Debian-specific but anyway.. Choqok reports an authentication error when launching and when trying to compose (you don't even get to the send bit) a direct message. The reported dialog says "This method requires authentication." but I ran it from a shell and saw this extra information if that helps: "choqok(28086): Error at request "/1/statuses/friends.xml?cursor=-1" : "This method requires authentication."" It reports the same error upon launch and upon direct message composition.
