Hi Patrick, Julien
Since linux-image-3.1.0 arrived in unstable (many thanks Ben),
perhaps it would be nice if you could try it with your NIC so we learn
how well new r8169 work with your card.
Could you please provide some feedback?
Because r8168 qualifies for non-free I would like to have it

Hi Patrick,
I will be very happy if you find this driver useful.
You can get it from mentors (dget):

or from git repository:

This is merely an alternative driver from hardware vendor.
Sometimes you might need alternatives if your hardware doesn't work well,
or if you just suspect it do not work well but you need something to
compare with.
Fixing stuff is always good if you can do it.

Hi Martin,
I'm 100% with you.
However I rather see my job in helping users to have a usable
environment rather negotiating vendors who don't even have a contact
email regarding this driver, not to mention the lack of public repository.
As I recently

There is an alternative, and it should be fixed.
It certainly should, but what can I do?
I packaged it because I suspected that I have a problematic hardware -
it turned out that I don't.
However this alternative driver was quite helpful on order to
troubleshoot the problem.

This is to substitute built-in r8169 driver if it doesn't work well.
Please don't. If this gets added to Debian then every time there is a
bug in in-tree r8169 then users will be told 'oh, try r8168'. And if
the bug is not present in r8168 then they may not report the bug at all,

Thanks, Julien.
I see you've made r8168-source package as well - nice.
I will introduce support for module-assistant if we agree on package inclusion.
I would second that as I have another problem with r8169 which doesn't
support support resuming from suspend/hibernate. I've been using r8168

They can do that now, as we don't stop them from installing the version
Realtek distributes.
And do not help either. So do we care?
Users don't want alternative drivers; they just want a working driver
installed automatically. The answer to 'this package is buggy' should
not be 'never
