Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.16.1.2
Severity: minor

Hi,

I read deb-shlibs(5) today and I felt it was rather vague on the
"dependencies" field. Fortunately, Policy Manual ยง8.6.3 has the
following:

"""
dependencies has the same syntax as a dependency field in a binary
package control file. It should give details of which packages are
required to satisfy a binary built against the version of the library
contained in the package. See Syntax of relationship fields, Section
7.1 for details.
"""

The example in deb-shlibs(5) is not enough to deduce this[1]. The
manpage does say "See the Debian Policy Manual for (further) details".
However, I feel deb-shlibs(5) should explicitly tell me that
dependencies has the same syntax as the Depends field[2].

~Niels

[1] Mind you, I think it is better to keep the example simple.

[2] I don't mind being sent to the Policy for reading up on the
syntax of a dependency field.
