I also experienced a similar issue with Dovecot 1:2.1.7-7, during the
delivery from Postfix to dovecot-lda (not LMTP), related to the write
locking of the /var/mail/user mailbox.
dovecot: lda(user): Error: file_dotlock_create(/var/mail/user) failed:
Permission denied (euid=1000(user)
I, too, ran into this problem. I seem to have solved it by editing
10-mail.conf to set mail_privileged_group = mail
I don't know if that's recommended, but it seems to work.
