One more note: verbiste-gnome is a GTK2 application and so was the mate applet. However, the libmate-panel-applet-dev dependency switched to GTK3. This is the culprit of this problem. It seems that the only way to fix this would be to port the mate applet, and probably verbiste-gnome to GTK3.
