Thank you for looking into it. Personally, I have no problem if you decide
not to fix this and I can see that patching the package instead of waiting
for upstream support could open a can of worms.

Actually CUDA 8.0.44 does not support GCC-6 at all. Lookup this document for
working compiler combinations:
