Well, that's different! Seems to work properly!
Looking good, I've now got a prompt to insert the Root floppy.
Unfortuantely, I'm just off on an overnight trip, so won't be able to
test any more until tomorrow evening.

More data. I have managed to get an initramfs debug out of the

for the recent kernel

Here is the log from a run today.
Looking into a real initram image also created today I see that the
modules (/lib/modules/2.6.28-2-686/kernel/drivers/ ...) all have a
27 Dec. 2010 date! This is a little surprising
?
Does it look as though the process which is supposed to load modules is
failing?

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***
* What led up to the situation?
Installing Debian 8.1.0 AMD64 on second hard drive and putting grub on that
drive
*
I can confirm that this problem still exists in Jessie 8.1 and with a
GeForce 7025 on-board video (MCP61 nVidia chips).
Working solution is a nouveau.conf file (/etc/modprobe.d/) containing
options nouveau noaccel=1
