So after testing everything was fine on my ia32 laptop, I tried to debug
a bit more on amd64 arch.
I first tried to reproduce the original problem (causing crash on
icedove after upgrade) So I purged the 0.8 version, resintalled the
previously working 0.7-2 version.

Could you try that in gdb and show the backtrace. Rebuilding the package
with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt,nostrip would improve
