Yes, to fix the bug, you have to follow anbe's suggestions in the bug.
Namely, add the appropriate Breaks and the Replaces fields in d/control.

Hi Nicolas,
Is it willingly that you don't use the usual Closes: #bug in your
changelog? This would allow the bugs to get closed and notified of the
changes you made.
Cheers,

Hi,
Would you prefer if we push a fix or if we wait for mailman-hyperkitty
migration?

Hence, the error trace is messed, and the assertion fails.
I skipped the test for now, and submitted a bug upstream.
I'll upload as soon as I've access to my GPG key.

Dear Kurt,
This would imply to do a Debian patch in upstream's source.
Do you think it's the best solution?
Cheers!

If you wish, I'm eager to contribute into implementing this solution, but

If you prefer to handle this on your own, it's fine with me, too.
Thanks for considering, and cheers!

idea I'd be pleased to provide the new package work and a team patch for the
current package.
If you really wish to go by a patch for 1.6.5, I'll try to do it after the
end of my PhD thesis manuscript writing.

I had a look at the changelog of upstream and failed to see any notice
regarding py2 drop. Thanks for your remark.
Unfortunately, 2.0 is the only py3.7 compatible release. :/
Do you wish me to change my patch to drop py2 support?
a, so I
can, if the need arises again, offer you some git-formatted patches and a
pull request directly on salsa (which would clearly avoid some
misunderstandings).
Thanks for your work, and help in solving these issues! :)

As you can see, the patch file is horribly big.
I also made a git repo on salsa, and the changes can be retrieved from
there.
