This is a very long story about spacing problems in
Freefont. Surprisingly, noone seems to have ever talked of this with
you...at least publically....
The spasing problems is pretty easy to reproduce, as one of the people
who talked about this bug wrote:
Just use OpenOffice Writer, insert some text and swith to/from one of
the Free* fonts to/from another font. For instance from Arial to
FreeSans and back...
If you read the above, you'll see that the bug has been opened and
closed a few times but it is at least present with the Debian
packages of 20060126 and those of 20051206...

It makes the font ugly to the point of unreadability when used as a
primary font, such as for a web browser. That's how many of us are using
it from prior experience with this problem. It's bad enough that the font
is basically unusable for me as long as it has this bug, which is the
criteria for grave.
This bug was fixed and stayed fixed for a long time, but was just
reintroduced in the upload of a new version.
