Bug#436164: Will be fixed in KDE4

2008-01-02 Thread Sune Vuorela

The xpdf in kpdf right now is 3.02, incompatible with 3.01, which is the
base of poppler up to 0.5 and thus can't be easily changed. When poppler
0.6 comes out it should be easy to patch kpdf to work against that.

poppler 0.6 is now in the archive, please get rid of the xpdf copy in
 kpdf.

it isn't that easy as Isaac make it sound like.

As far as I have understood it, kpdf uses bunches of internal headers from
xpdf/poppler. These internal parts neither gives source nor binary
compability between patch revisions of poppler. And these headers aren't
installed by poppler in debian. I wouldn't unleash such a beast.

The more stable parts of poppler (the -gtk/-qt3/-qt4) parts of poppler will
require a major rewrite of kpdf to actually use. (the -qt3 version in this
case) - oh - and it isn't even sure that the -qt3 version exports the right
things if people took on this big task of rewriting it.

This big rewrite has been done as part of kde4 called okular.

And so now someone probably will ask: why not ship okular instead?

The answer is simple: kde4 and kde3 stuff doesn't integrate. You can't use
kde3 kparts in kde4 and the other way around. So we would loose all kinds of
nice integrations we have in kde.

Lenny will surely ship with KDE4, which includes a new document viewer
which replaces kpdf and which uses poppler instead of shipping an
  internal xpdf copy.

AFAIK, that's not so sure anymore. Though this bug should get fixed one
 way or the other...

The fix is still kde4, but unless the lenny release scheduled get delayed with
at least 6 months (and gets announced soon), it won't happen in lenny time.

Man, how could I do for inserting the BIOS of the keyboard from Netscape 2.5?

You neither must boot a connection, nor need to configure a memory for
uninstalling a coaxial port to the ISA prompt.

2008-01-02 Thread Bernhard R. Link
* Sune Vuorela [EMAIL PROTECTED] [071231 17:26]:
If people want to create patches for the unaligned load/store they are most
welcome to do so. I don't plan to.

Please note that there are architectures where emulating unaligned
accesses is not possible (AFAIK at least sparc), many architectures
also have this with some special accesses (I heared rummors that
MMX access on i386 also needs aligned access, so a future better
optimizing gcc may also cause it to fail on i386).
Also most behaviour causing unaligned access is usually playing dirty
tricks invoking undefined C behaviour, so a better optimizing compiler
(or even already existing compilers when some other things change a
little bit, for example by also breaking aliasing in funny ways) may
cause the program to go havoc.

For all of those reason I personally consider any buildd setup broken,
where such catchable unaligned does not cause a bus error. (That is only
my personal opinion, though I personaly tend to get very personal when
discussing this).

Hochachtungsvoll,
Bernhard R. Link

When buildd maintainers get around doing stuff. buildd-maintainers != package
maintainers, so there is nothing for the package maintainers to track here. I
guess it has been christmas related, so I expect it soon.

it hasn't given problems on any archs except hppa. and linux-hppa isn't one
of the quite many archs that is supproted by upstream.

It should be quite easy to locate the parts of the code that does the
unaligned access in qt4. Last I looked, it ended up in
qt4-x11-4.3.3/src/corelib/global/qnumeric_p.h

with lines like this: (61,74,87)
return *reinterpret_castconst double *(QSysInfo::ByteOrder ==
QSysInfo::BigEndian ? qt_be_inf_bytes : qt_le_inf_bytes);

Then please don't spend too much time debating it, but just do a patch for qt4
instead ;)

The point is that you can never log from a front-end of a prompt to the
digital proxy to a PCI display on the DirectX monitor over a RO utility.

kmilo not working on Lenny

2008-01-02 Thread David Jarvie
I can't get kmilo to respond in any way to the volume and mute keys on my
Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop (which uses the generic kmilo module). It works OK
using (K)Ubuntu Gutsy on the same computer. It's not clear what configuration
is needed. The mute and volume up/down keys produce the standard codes
defined in /usr/share/hotkey-setup/key-constants, so there doesn't appear to
be a keyboard mapping problem. On Ubuntu the keys (via kmilo) produce an OSD
display when they are pressed, but nothing shows on Debian. Kmilo is set to
run in the KDE service manager.

Any hints as to what else to look at?

P.S. I'm aware of the bugs in the generic module - there are fixes available
now from the KDE source repository.

Found the solution - using xev the keycodes turn out to be different under X,
and xmodmap is needed. See
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=396622.
