Programming Pearls, by Jon Bentley.
With recommends, newbie and novice users will get the packages, and
one of the first things you learn in wrangling apt-get/aptitude is how
to not install Recommends by default.

lines of the special-purpose, do-something-nice HomePlug 1.0/AV
device. What does AV mean? Anti-virus? Audio-video? Advanced
Virtualization?

That's the situation about FreeBSD. I'm not even sure about the Hurd.
