Here is my report on how I got the siliconmotion driver to run:
First, I installed debian on my lemote by downloading a netinst.iso

Hmmm, I responded to the bug report a few weeks ago, but it doesn't
appear to be in the system.
I fetched my old Phillips Brilliance 109 from the storage unit, and it
exhibits the same bug.
