the question regarding the sanity of the specification itself, it's
definitely a bug that the Rhythmbox package in Ubuntu currently
implements the specification only partially, leading to inconsistent
behaviour.
It gets even worse with the panel on the right: the distance from the
bottom-right corner is one calendar width away.

On U 9.04 with Nautilius 2.0.4 I do not experience any of the hangs. With other
