I was having this problem with an nvidia 6600GT. I haven't been able to
reproduce it after downgrading to the 173 series nvidia driver, using
the Additional Drivers UI.
Does this work for anyone else? It suggests this is indeed a bug in the
current series nvidia driver.

ntpdate being installed by default (dependency of ubuntu-minimal) it is
not an issue, and time can always be synced from network (if there's an
access to a time server of course)
