The fix in ubuntu proposed didn't fix my issue. I was testing version 3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11.1. I tested with Caps Lock as the shortcut key, but I've also tried with Alt-Shift. I am able to change the keyboard layout once, and then it gets stuck in the second layout. The indicator didn't change at all

I don't think so. When I access the /gallery_remote2.php page in the browser it opens without asking for any password. I didn't mention it before, but the gallery is based on the Drupal module image_pub which is supposed to be compatible with Gallery Remote. But even if it isn't, I don't think
