Thanks for your bugreport.
The effect you see here is that gdebi has to run as root for the actual
install. This switches the theme because it switches the user. We would
have to add something to gksu to preserve the theme.

I debugged this problem and this, #56395, #56382 are indeed all the same
problem. I uploaded a new version that works around it for now (by
disabling g_log_set_always_fatal())

Some additional data.
Changing the theme from ubuntu to standard in gconf (/apps
/notification-daemon/theme) has no effect. So it seems to be not theme
releated.
The crash is actually a Gtk-Crtitical warning that causes the daemon to
fail. I did a upload to disable this for now to avoid too many

This is fixed in edgy by using freetype 2.2.1 that restores binary
compatiblity (this is still a issue in dapper, also gworkspace.app loads
fine in dapper).
