@Johannes Frank: fresh lucid build done.
@lanzen: the startup script won’t prevent g-s-d from overriding your
settings when the user mucks the settings around in the GUI. On the up
side, in GNOME 3 there will be a proper place to put this script so that
it will work reliably.

There must have been a misunderstanding here. I’m not going to support
my patches on GNOME 3. In fact, they are not needed there, as there is
the hook framework.
When time allows, I will update my PPA for Natty, but only because Natty
was released with GNOME 2. (And I understand them — GNOME 3 is
In GNOME, they decided that it is more appropriate to provide a hook
that will run a user-customizable script when an input device is added
or removed. The xinput or synclient invocations shown above can be added
to this hook. So, for all intents and purposes, this bug can be
considered “Fix
I have not yet installed Natty, and I am not at all confident I will be
ditching Gnome. Technically, if Unity also overwrites synaptic settings
with non-configurable defaults, that would be a separate bug in a
different program.

Ok, it was just a matter of copying the package from my “proposed” ppa.
Enjoy.

I’ve added to my PPA a version of gnome-control-center that allows one
to configure tap-to-click and corner click button mappings via GUI.
Maverick only. Testing results, regression reports, positive or negative
feedback, constructive criticism welcome.

Yes it is a GNOME bug and a link to the related upstream bug report is
provided above. But I am doing limited testing on Ubuntu users like
myself while waiting for the upstream to come out of feature freeze.
Meanwhile, the package for Maverick is available in ppa:yurivkhan/ppa,
although it is
For me, the workaround command fails with:
No such schema `org.gnome.Empathy.conversation' specified in override
file `/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ubuntu-artwork.gschema.override'
This is probably because I had uninstalled empathy before. After
reinstalling empathy, `sudo glib-compile-schemas
I’m afraid not, as whenever I happen to have enough free time to work on
this patch, both GNOME and Ubuntu turn out to be in feature freeze, and
extended configurability counts as a feature.
However, I will produce PPA builds for Maverick as soon as I get around
to installing the alpha and will
@Johannes Konow
If you are using the lucid-updates and/or lucid-proposed repositories,
you might also want to add ppa:yurivkhan/proposed.

If you are using synaptic, you can force my version and then pin it. But
you will miss on updates.
I have updated the package but the build farm is very busy these days.
Also, since Lucid is officially out, I’m freezing my main PPA. Further
official updates are in the lucid-proposed pocket; my
Thanks for prodding me. I uploaded the updated source packages; builds
should be available in about an hour.

The patch above is a little dated and will not apply cleanly to gnome-
settings-daemon 2.30. I maintain a package in my PPA, the relevant
patches are:
06_add_corner_tapping_button_settings.patch
06_add_tap-to-click_button_settings.patch
06_change_tap-to-click_defaults.patch
I will post their
In this patch:
* Add gconf settings for one-finger, two-finger and three-finger taps.
* Add code to read and apply these settings.
* Additionally, the effect of X device button mapping on the tap mapping is
considered. (Original code does not do this, causing incorrect behavior if the

Sorry, mixed up the order. This one is the first in series. The

* Add gconf settings for corner taps (left top, left bottom, right top, right
bottom).
* Use the same logic as in the
This patch was added just yesterday, following suit with Alberto Milone who
changed the defaults. This also changes defaults to what they were in Jaunty:
* 1 finger for left button
* 2 fingers for middle button
* 3 fingers for right button
** Patch added: 06_change_tap-to-click_defaults.patch

I try to keep up and update my packages when a new version is released.

Uploaded an update;
I have added another patch that adds gconf settings for corner taps.
Available in my PPA for Lucid only.
As for changing defaults, I don’t really have a strong opinion. When
there is configuration options, who needs defaults? :)

Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
Alex Dicks wrote on 2010-03-16:
Perhaps the defaults for those keys could be changed to give the Jaunty
behaviour back?
And then users who started using Ubuntu during the Karmic era will file
a bug that Lucid changed the defaults and broke their habits, just as we
are blaming Karmic here.
Added Karmic test packages to PPA.
