I discovered how to switch the keyboard layout and other preferences in Ubuntu 13.10. Here is what I did - 1. sudo apt-get install ibus-clutter ibus-qt4 (not sure if this step is necessary, but I noticed these two were missing with my Ubuntu 13.10 install, even after enabling ibus-chewing)
