This still happens on Ubuntu 16.04.
The burning itself is fast, takes a couple minutes, but the image checksum
takes about 20 minutes.
It is not clear what this does, why it happens and why it's so slow.
I canceled it when it was about 70% done and it said "Success 18.4 EB" (I only
wrote a 3.3
Message is still the same in xubuntu 14.04.2 using brasero.
It is misleading. I cancelled the process and the disc came out just as fine.

I was burning a CD on Ubuntu 10.10 and I got the creating image
checksum - after a while I chose Cancel and received a message Image
successfully burned to CD and the drive opened. Suggest message CD/DVD
burned. Now verifying data. Verification is not not mandatory. You can

I agree with David, the message should say something like Verifying
CD/DVD. I had to Google creating image

I also noticed that Creating image checksum is printed twice. Once
before the burn and then after.
I guess first it is Calculating checksum of the image for later
verifying and then it is Reading recorded disc and calculating its
checksum to verifiy against image checksum.

Or maybe Verifying recorded data correctness.
