sadly, sign out trick does not work for me. Since I can log into
facebook from ipod as well as browser (not same time) then does it
suggest a bug in empathy?

Hello,
I Had the same problem, login on facebook chat from Empathy just stopped
working.
doing a logout from my session in google chrome and login again resolved
this issue for me.
