I had this problem on Unity desktop, but since then I have re-installed
Ubuntu Natty from a setup disk. Before I had a weather indicator which
showed an icon on the notification area. If I then started Skype I got the
problem of a 1 pixel icon. However now I have no other indicators installed

unsupported.

I, too, had a weather indicator on the panel (that one which comes with
the clock) which I cannot make working again in Natty with GNOME2
(Compiz), although I can see the weather information below the time zone
map when the clock is expanded - don't know if this is related, though.

Skype icon comes after kill the skype process and restart it, in my
natty x64. But postpone start (sleep a few seconds before launch skype)
doesn't work for me.
Seems lots of people using skype, hope fix this issue soon, though now
its MS skype.

I noticed something interesting: sometimes the system boots up very fast
(most of the times) and sometimes it takes a while (not just a little
longer but a lot longer). When the system boots fast I get 1 px icons
and when it takes its time it shows the icons correctly (both Skype and
Vlc). From
Another workaround for this: Go to skype settings and check start skype
in minimized mode. It works for me, the skype icon never was displayed
in 1 pixel size anymore.

I have the same thing with Eiskaltdc++ Qt.
It seems that this bug affects all QT applications which minimize to tray.
The workaround with killall notification-area-applet works, but it takes two
or three times to run the command for all the icons to appear in the tray
correctly.

My problem happens on 11.04 amd64, Unity desktop. I installed Skype
through Software Center. At the beginning, everything goes well.
After a long time use (maybe 1 or 2 hours, actually it's not long on my
machine), Skype icon in notification area disappears, but the process
is still running.

Same thing for me in Ubuntu Classic. Like Edward Deng, in Unity there's
not even a pixel indicator. The workaround suggested by Teo Siang Hoe
using the shell script worked for me. The problem is that i have to do
it every time I run skype.

Problem seems to be connected with compiz...
I have another workaround, for those with whom reading notification area to
panel does not work.
Each time I open Skype I change Compiz to Metacity Window Manager - MWM -
install compiz fusion icon from Software Center .
While Metacity is enabled
For some reason right now it all works just fine, both Vlc and Skype
icons. I installed Apache2 package, mySql both server and client and
Mysql administrator and Query Browse, and php5 and php5-xdebug. I also
installed Kompozer and updated Netbeans and that is pretty much it.
After restarting the

I created a script containing sleep 10 skype and add it to the
startup applications. The skype icon never becomes a dot for couple of

I have the same bug:
Natty 11.04 64bit with Classical gnome
I think I found a solution.
The problem is the area dedicated to app icons: it is not resized
automatically, when a new icon comes (for instance skype's icon).
on the top panel:
- Unlock notification area applet
- resize it manually
I have no problem in Ubuntu Classic, but in Ubuntu (Unity) cannot open
psi-plus menu - no ANY icon in notification area are visible. Skype
shows icon without problems in both modes.

I notice that now Vlc player icon is also a dot, a small 1px orange dot.

Here's a crappy workaround for people on 'classic mode' that have the
problem.
Launch skype
Open applications - terminal, and type: killall gnome-panel
This fixes the problem for Skype and Shutter, not sure about other apps
that use the notification area.

I've made a killall notification-area-applet launcher on my panel, so I just
have to hit it after I launch a qt application and everything works, that's how
it looks

looked around and found this file. Run it in the terminal and select
restore panel to default. Now my skype icon is showing perfectly.

Same here on my (upgraded) natty, no icons for Clementine and Skype in
the notification bar in Unity or Ubuntu classic. I *do* get icons when
