Worked for me as well.
$ sudo mv /root/.gimp-2.6 /home/MY_USERNAME/.gimp-2.6
was OK

Since I got the same bug (Kubuntu 11.04 - fresh install - fully updated), but
solved it another way, here it is:
Got the segmentation fault error on starting gimp like this:
$ gimp
Then tried (I know ..

search system doesn't recognize that it's the same as segfault.)
