It looks like Empathy tries to restore the previous position of
conversation windows (i.e. the position the window had the last time you
had a conversation window). If that position was originally on an
external monitor and later the monitor is disconnected then Empathy
still tries to open the window at the same position, i.e. off screen and
in GNOME 3 it is difficult to move it back.
