I have this issue from time to time on both laptop and desktop (both having single-head configuration).
laptop: ATI Radeon x1250 Ubuntu 11.04 x86, kernel: 2.6.38-8-generic desktop: ATI Radeon HD 2600XT Ubuntu 11.04 x86, kernel: 2.6.38-8-generic-pae Both machines have Unity running.
