I found a workaround in case anyone's interested. By redirecting stderr to a
file.
It would be something like: gnome-open myfile.pdf 2 FileWithAllTheWarnings
rm FileWithAllTheWarnings
Doesn't fix the problem, but at least you can now open pdf files from
the terminal without getting all those
I did some more testing. After de-installation of lo-menubar, there was no
crash again. This solved the problem for me.

thank you for the extensive information provided. I was unaware that there
is an Ubuntu approved font, this is why I resorted to an external source,
the only one known to me. I will immediately go about installing and trying
the Ubuntu-font. If I still encounter problems, which
