Do you get a error if you run:
/usr/share/software-center/update-software-center-channels
in a terminal?
When the crash happened, your system was doing a package upgrade (e.g.
via update-manager), is that right?

Can you reproduce this somehow? Looking at the code this looks like a network
applet issue, but if you can find steps
to reproduce this error and post that would make debugging this bug easier.

If it's of any help, here's what the terminal tells me the moment the
slider disappears:
janne@esprimo:~$ gnome-control-center

Let me know if there are more details that can be dug up.

I can not reproduce this (fully at least). When I click back I get a spinner
and it takes a long time (20-30sec) until the tree
is availalbe again. But eventually it does become available. Its pretty slow
(and undeeded though).
