surprising because apparently the AMD Cedar GPU shouldn't max out until
textures reach 16384x16384 [1].
Maybe it's a video encoding limitation then, such as [2] [3].

I am affected by this bug. If I'm not mistaken all the individuals
affected by this bug are using AMD Ryzen? I see that the codec appears
to also be the AC1220. I'm using Asus x470-f gaming motherboard. I've
tried ALL the fixes on arch wiki (this include the tsched=0 fix in the
pulse audio config

What does "status: invalid" mean?
In XFCE > Settings > Additional Drivers > Additional Drivers, it's
currently set to "NVIDIA Corporation GF106M [GeForce GTX 460M] "[x] Using
NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-390 (proprietary, tested)".
Other options are "[ ] Using NVIDIA bindary
Looks like the next step would be to test with an older NVIDIA driver
version from the Ubuntu repository, and maybe with the slightly newer
version 390.77 from the NVIDIA website also.

Thanks for getting in touch, and that's fair.
This pattern of opening a popup player isn't used any more by any of the
sites I can think of. So I'm not sure if it's fixed or not, but from my
point of view it's fine to close this bug.

I didn't try 'marco' because I didn't know what that is. Installing it
now.
totem used with 'marco' and 'compton' are not washed out, but strangely
transparent. See attached image for 'marco' -- compton is the same just
no messages on stderr from compton.

If those affected think this is the same bug, you could mark this bug as
a duplicate of #1780664. Bug #1780664 has a fix committed now, which
should be available in xenial-updates soon.
