Oh come to think of it, there is a commonality between Firefox, VLC and
Chrome. That is they all try to follow the system theme but all three
are NOT GTK apps. They each use different toolkits. So I fear this is

It kind if sounds like the system is in partial sleep mode, or trying to
get there. And that would make sense because when the bug occurs the lid
is closed and you've disconnected the only other screen. So you're kind
of asking for screen hotplugging (or switching back to it on the KVM) to
wake
I expect that part isn't working, and isn't easily fixable... This is a
tablet and some tablets commonly have a native screen orientation of
portrait so that's probably what Plymouth is using.
When the gnome-shell login screen starts it detects the correct
orientation and automatically rotates to

#3. Then if there's still no evidence of a crash we can assume it's a
freeze. The next thing to try then is to force it to dump core during
the freeze (from an ssh login) by sending some signal to the process
like:
kill
I'm only trying to determine if this is a gnome-shell bug right now or a
bug belonging to some other component.
Since your setup only uses gnome-shell in the host and not the guest it
should be fairly simple to remove gnome-shell from the equation.

Got it thanks! I was using 'Ubuntu on Wayland' where the bug does not
occur.
